The Way I See some local and statewide news:

Who Makes The Laws?

6/01/07

Recently the Ohio County Prosecutor’s office "set the record straight" about the Wheeling-Ohio County Board of Health’s recent "smoking ban" (all restaurants and bars with the exception of "gaming" rooms in bars and Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center;) and the Board’s ability to tell bar owners WHAT they are allowed to have in their gaming rooms (NO televisions, tables, chairs, pool tables.)

Apparently, "regulations passed by the board of health have the same force and effect as laws passed by the state Legislature." AND "It is an exception to the smoking ban in establishments which have video lottery. We are of the opinion the board of health can regulate the size and scope of those rooms."

Oh, my! The Board of Health can say and do whatever they want with the same force and effect as laws passed by the state Legislature?

Lions, tigers and bears, Toto, LOOK OUT!

I guess, Toto, ALL must be as big and have as enough money as Wheeling Racetrack & Gaming Center to BE an exception.

So, the Board of Health can say whatever they want, regardless of LAWS. They get to determine what is appropriate and what is not? They get to determine, well, they can obviously do whatever damned thing Doctor William Mercer decides what he wants.

So, what if the Board of Health decided walking outside was during allergy season was detrimental to someone’s health? I guess, since the Board of Health is capable of making LAW, we’d not be allowed to walk outside.

If the Board of Health decides that eating a cheeseburger is detrimental to one’s health? Well, they CAN make LAW. Sorry, McDonald’s and Burger King.

If the Board of Health decides that water in public pools isn’t clean enough? Put your clothes back on, kids, IT is the LAW.

If the Board of Health decides loud music will harm one’s hearing? Well, I guess all earphones will be outlawed.

If the Board of Health decides breast-feeding isn’t good for a newborn? Go buy your Platex bottles.

If the Board of Health decides the emissions from cars is unhealthy? Everyone have a bicycle?

If the Board of Heath decides one person’s life is more important than another’s? Since that opinion is the same as the LAW, we’d all better watch out.

Then again, if we all lived in the Board of Health’s "size and scope of those rooms," we’ll all be able to live safely and freely!

Oh, Toto, what has happened to our Land of the Free and the Brave?

Don’t Strike Teachers

Teachers going "on strike" are abominable.

So many profess to have such a vocation to teach, but it’s funny that THAT vocation leads them to doing harm to the students they had such a vocation to teach.

Okay, so, some teachers may become unhappy with certain aspects of their "union contracts," well, is that the students’ fault? Walking out of the classroom only harms the students. It’s NOT their fault teachers are unhappy.

So, the educators who strike are USING these students. They are, frankly, punishing children, the same ones they felt such a vocation to educate, to advance their own wants. The "precious young minds" one wanted to encourage and inspire became pawns in one’s own self-interest.

Of course we all have to earn a living; but I find it amazing, and very sad, that some will punish the exact ones they wanted to devote their lives to educating.

Certainly teachers are a most important part of our society, they are teaching our children. They deserve much respect and admiration (especially these days due to the chains they have around them with regard to discipline of the students and such; and how today’s parents just turn over their children to the educator and expect them to be parent and teacher until the parent decides the teacher was "wrong" somehow.) I DO understand this (and I think it’s a shame that teachers are expected to educate but NOT discipline…but that’s another article.)

Teachers striking is ONLY HURTING THE STUDENTS.

Table Gambling Election

Seems like an amazing turnout for the first day of Early Voting for the Table Gambling.

We’ve all seen the "Vote YES" vans, haven’t we?

Wheeling Island Racetrack & Gaming drove their employees to cast their votes, on the clock, getting paid to do it.

How many of them have never voted before and never will again? How many are voting because their employer "suggested’ they should and then paid them for it?

Let’s look at the rest of the State of West Virginia who isn’t allowed to participate. They aren’t allowed to vote yet they are going to benefit, if the referendum for table gambling passes.

So, we four counties are voting not just for "gambling" in our counties; we’re deciding about our communities and futures.

It’s nice to know that 3% of revenues will go to the Lottery Commission to administer and enforce regulations. Including $500,00 for Compulsive Gambling Treatment Fund. After all, if we are going to encourage such, we should be able to pay for the detriment that will befall.

Funny, though, does the State have such a fund that aids drinkers and /or drunks? What portion of the "sin tax" attached to beer and wine is allotted to a "Compulsive Drinker’s Treatment Fund?"

The revenue from table gambling will help the State; they’ve seen to that. The State will then distribute the revenue as it sees fit; to every county and municipality in the State. Those who were not allowed to vote on such a statewide issue will benefit.

The 400 jobs that I keep hearing about and see as flyers in my mailbox (every single day) don’t tell me anything. WHAT JOBS? Dealer jobs that pay barely over minimum wage but with tips can net someone $40,000? Tips, which one only needs to claim 10% regardless of how much one receives? Just like a waiter or waitress? Yeah, show me a waiter at Perkins who makes $30, 000 a year.

Is Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center our hope and future of Wheeling? Is that all we have? Are all of our hopes and dreams dependent on gambling?

I don’t know. Expansion and opportunity here in Wheeling is not only needed, but it would seriously change the face of Wheeling and hometown. Do we want Wheeling to become Atlantic City or Vegas? Is gambling and working at WIG a better answer than businesses opening up in Wheeling? Do we want to be a gambling city or the Friendly City? Can we be both?

More Judges?

I read an Editorial on April 9, 2007 about the Governor saying more Judges are needed because the courts full and judges are busy.

YES, the courts ARE filled and judges ARE very busy.

Here’s a novel idea: instead of adding more judges, let’s put an END the nuisance lawsuits that are clogging up the courts.

"YOUR coffee burned me when I spilled it, so I’m suing you;" "I’m fat because I willingly eat your food, so I’m suing you;" "I willingly went into the Halloween Haunted House but I became so frightened, I am suing you;" "I was drunk when I committed the crime, therefore I am NOT accountable for my actions;" "You saved my life, but I think it took too long for you to do it, I’m suing you;" "I don’t like the way you looked at me the other day, I’m suing you;" "You insulted me by opening the door for me, I’m suing you;" "You didn’t open the door for me, I’m suing you;" "A piece of lint fell out of your pocket while walking past my yard thereby littering, I’m suing you."

It’s incredible, not necessarily surprising, that anyone with any kind of stupid complaint can find a lawyer who will represent them and "fight" for the million dollar reward for the injury of finding dog poop on the sidewalk. What constantly surprises me is that our courts even consider these idiotic cases.

You ate fast food every meal every day, it’s YOUR fault you’re fat and unhealthy…next case. YOU ordered hot coffee but you were stupid enough to put the cup between your legs and you got burnt, YOUR fault…. next case. (And frankly, know this much, you’d sue if the coffee had been lukewarm.) Being drunk or "under the influence" does NOT excuse irresponsible behavior. The fact that you’re alive is reason enough to be thankful; you could have gone all the way "into the light."

Money. These stupid lawsuits that clog up our courts are about nothing but money. It’s unfortunate that they actually do receive exactly that. What SHOULD happen is if the lawyer doesn’t say it, the judge should say, "Get out of here!"

There are legitimate lawsuits, but they are often left behind because of the ones that should have never even have been considered in the first place. Our Justice System was not intended to be abused by "I’m not happy," "My fault, but how much can I get from them?"

Why Is Reward Needed?

Don’t get me wrong. I believe EVERY effort to apprehend a criminal is warranted, needed and should be pursued.

I do NOT question law enforcement or victims. I do, however, question US as society.

I wonder WHY someone would NEED the incentive of a reward, money, to do what is right.

Are we THAT far gone from humanity that one requires or may require a monetary reward to do the right thing; exactly that person would hope for from others in the same circumstance.

The person who finds a lost wallet on the street, "I’ll return it to you, but what do I get for returning it?" The person who may have information and/or knowledge about a criminal, "I’ll tell you, but what do I get for telling you?"

What kind of people are we that we barter for honesty and integrity? What kind of person thinks to him or herself, "I’ll return this lost wallet just as soon as I find out HOW MUCH they’ll give me to return it;" "I’ll tell what I know only when the reward gets "this high," until then, I’m waiting because the "pot" for me is sure to grow higher; after all, I should be compensated."

Compensated for telling the truth and doing what is right? I think a clear conscience should be compensation enough. That and being able to look at oneself in the mirror everyday knowing one is an honest person; a person who has had the integrity and compassion for another to help them; one who wants to help ease the pain and suffering of another because it’s the right thing to do; the right thing him or her as well as the difference that is made to the others.

Those who "wait for the reward" should realize and understand that someday THEY may be the victims. Think about it: would YOU want to wait for the "reward" for someone to come forward to reach the same limits?

Students Going Hungry?

Are Ohio County school children being denied meals at school?

The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program operating in over 100,000 public and non-profit private schools and residential childcare institutions. School districts and independent schools that choose to take part in the lunch program get cash subsidies and donated commodities from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for each meal they serve. In return, they must serve lunches that meet Federal requirements, and they must offer free or reduced price lunches to eligible children.

The Ohio County Schools Child Nutrition Program states, "All 13 Ohio County Schools will provide breakfast and lunch daily… Breakfast Program prices: 70 cents for elementary and middle school students, 75 cents for high school students, 30 cents for students qualifying for reduced prices; Lunch Program Prices: 85 cents for elementary students, 90 cents for middle school students, 95 cents for high school students, 40 cents for students qualifying for reduced prices."

The student charges his or her meals at school using their student I.D. Each month, an itemized statement is mailed to each household and balances carry over. "Any student with a balance of $100 or more will not be permitted to charge meals until a payment that reduces the balance to less than $100 has been received."

We’re adults, we know what happens if we don’t pay our bills; the telephone gets disconnected, the cable gets disconnected, the cell phone stops working. That is just a fact of life.

However, a child being denied eating a meal because his or her parent didn’t pay the bill should not be punished. That student has no control over the responsible adults.

I understand that we must pay our bills; otherwise we lose service. This isn’t the same thing as a kid being denied renting a movie at the video store because of an outstanding balance. No child should have to go hungry at school; that’s bad for both the mind and the body. Not to mention the possible embarrassment and humiliation that student could suffer.

As parents we are responsible for the life of another human being. It is our primary job to care for that child. There was a time when schools didn’t offer breakfast or lunch. When many of us were young, Mom gave us breakfast and packed our lunches or we went home for lunch. Many things, though, have changed since "the good ole’ days." Life is more complicated with both parents working, even more complicated when there is only one parent. What hasn’t changed is the responsibility of the parent to the child.

Free and reduced-price meals are available. From the FDA, "Any child at a participating school may purchase a meal through the National School Lunch Program. Children from families with incomes at or below 130 percent of the poverty level are eligible for free meals. Those with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty level are eligible for reduced-price meals, for which students can be charged no more than 40 cents. (For the period July 1, 2006, through June 30, 2007, 130 percent of the poverty level is $26,000 for a family of four; 185 percent is $37,000.)"

Of course, not everyone will "qualify" for these. The bottom line is paying the bill for food is more important than buying the latest video game for the child.

I’ve heard that some kids buy their lunch then give it to another student who hasn’t been allowed to eat lunch all week. That’s an amazing gesture on the part of that child and a testament to his or her parents; it’s also a sad statement about us as adults and parents.

FIG LEAF

6/8/07

I do like my routine. I'm a planner. I'm not a "fly by the seat of my pants" kind of guy. I'm not fond of surprises. I like KNOWING certain things.

Certainly there are things in life that happen unexpectedly; I'm much better dealing with them when they happen these days (as opposed to dissolving into an emotional mess crying, "WHY ME?")

However, my life, however regimented it may have appeared, lost all focus. I look back to a couple of years ago.

I started drinking. Let me qualify that: I lost control of drinking. What began as a drink or two after work when I was miserable at work became my life after work. Early on, I had a few drinks (after work) while searching the want ads and printing out resumes and cover letters.

Then, I got a new job. I got a job that I really love and enjoy. So, crisis was over; no need to drink.

But I did. The routine was in place. I asked myself over and over "why?" when I'd spent the past ten years of my life drinking three or four times a year. WHY am I still drinking every evening?

I've a sister who said to me, "Look. You lived without drinking and without any fun for ten years, you're due for some." Apparently I was out of my mind when I accepted her opinion as an excuse for my irresponsibility.

I am turning a new (fig) leaf. Not only do I NOT want to be a "drunk" anymore, I WANT MY LIFE BACK. The kicker is, I'm the one I've got to take it back from.

How? BREAK THE ROUTINE! Routine is good and comforting; however, some routines are harmful and destructive.

Aside from (and because of) the over-drinking, I've gained more weight in the past couple of years than I care to admit; I've made decisions I've regretted; I've compromised my health. (Okay, what does that say about me that my weight gain is the BIGGEST factor? LOL)

In order to really break the harmful routine and turn the new (fig) leaf, I must CHANGE. So, recently, instead of coming home from work and plopping my ever-growing ass and expanding waistline down in my own solitude, I've been having dinner with one of my sisters and her family (bless them for their kindness, love and support). (Who, by the way, are on Weight Watchers, so I guess I'm on Weight Watchers by proxy. lol)

It's working. I don't require or crave alcohol every evening anymore. Did I really or did I just drink because that was my routine? I've even begun losing weight. Though, I've re-discovered my love of ice cream. LOL

I'm finding myself again. I'm rediscovering my life. I'm ashamed of what I'd allowed to happen to me. I often told myself that I drank because I was just so miserable and unhappy; then, later, because drinking was just what I enjoyed. THAT does not excuse it. I didn't enjoy being a drunk and drinking did nothing to alleviate my unhappiness.

I am grateful that, however, I never missed a day at work and my job performance didn't suffer. I wonder to myself, even, about the fact that I've achieved such success in my employment.

Surely there are other factors that contributed to the "delinquency" of this man; emotional issues that I need to face and acknowledge. But one step at a time; I didn’t lose control overnight and neither can all problems be solved overnight.

GAMBLING

6/15/07

Ohio County voters have spoken. Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center will be allowed table games.

It’s been a heated topic as I’m sure it is in the other three counties in West Virginia who are allowed to vote on this statewide issue. Yes, you read that right: A statewide referendum that only four counties are allowed to decide.

"Vote YES!" "Vote NO!" "It’s about JOBS!" "It’s about GAMBLING!" "It’s about keeping our youth here!" "It’s about the break-down of family and society!"

WHAT is IT about? That depends on whom you ask.

One the one hand, it is totally about Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center (here in Ohio County.) It’s about a business facing loss of revenue because Pennsylvania is now a competitor. It’s about the State of West Virginia, which will receive revenue from the money spent; monies that will be spread throughout the State even though only four counties are deciding the issue.

On the other hand, it is totally about Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center (here in Ohio County.) It’s about more opportunities for employment at WIRGC -- from dealers (who will be able to receive education at West Virginia Northern Community College on how to be a card dealer) to construction jobs in the expansion of the facility to hotel staff to restaurant staff and every job that WIRGC offers that pays so well and offers benefits.

Or is it about another "quick fix?"

Isn’t this the same thing as when "slot machines" were legalized in West Virginia; after all, it meant more jobs at WIRGC to support the tourism from other states who will come to play and the increase in revenue for the State? All hail Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center.

What will happen in another seven to ten years when Pennsylvania approves table gaming? No one ever thought they’d approve slot machines then, but they have. Hence the sudden urgency to approve table gaming in West Virginia, it is the only a way to make up for the loss of all those monies coming here to play. And what if those who came to play the slots don’t want to play table games? They can play slot machines at home now.

Where do we go then? When we are faced once again with another state passing the same gambling that we have and see those not coming here anymore…. where do we go from there?

WIRGC has been vocal about the jobs that will accompany the passage of the West Virginia Gaming Bill; they’ve also been vocal about the loss of jobs that will ensue if table gaming isn’t allowed. Smells like a threat to me.

Is Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center ALL that we have? Are we putting all of our eggs in their basket? Well, in one way I guess that is so. After all, our city management either makes it so difficult for a business to survive in Wheeling or they just chase them out; however, the big bucks of WIRGC can even thwart Doctor Mercer and the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department. Both of which persecute the "little guy" and jump leaps and bounds for the "big money."

Do we want a "quick fix?" Haven’t we already seen that it’s only temporary? Do we really think that NOW is going to be forever? Do we really want to put our community and ourselves at the hands of ONE big business (and don’t be misled, WIRGC is NOT a local business.)?

If we want a "quick fix" yet again, we’ll do it. Then we’ll later find ourselves again in need of trying to save our city and community. There is no "quick fix;" it’s much like screaming at the microwave oven to "hurry!" If we want to be secure in our community, we must look past what may seem best NOW; we must look down the road and be patient and allow growth, encourage growth.

If the quick fix is all anyone wants, we’ll talk again in a few years; that is if any of us are still here.

Well, the referendum passed. Classes will begin to teach how to be a dealer in a casino. The construction of additions to accommodate will begin as well. All these new jobs; however, how permanent are the construction jobs? I mean, after the additions are complete, will all these "new jobs" remain? As for the dealer jobs, let’s not kid ourselves and let’s really look at the way it is. ANYONE can learn how to deal cards; but not anyone can be a dealer. Look at other casinos and you’ll see that the dealers are "beautiful" people; ALL of them – attractive, sexy men and women who are more ‘face’ than ‘skill.’ Yeah, much like Hollywood; looks mean more than talent.

If table gaming doesn’t "take off" as promised and WIRGC begins loosing money, we’ll certainly see the end to all these "new jobs" and more. After all, those in the corporate office aren’t considering anything other than their "bottom line." If WIRGC ceases to turn a profit, it’s over and it’ll be shut down. After all, don’t we see that all the time? The corporate office doesn’t care about the community or employees they only care about profit. If the profit fails the expectations of the corporation, so much for all the permanent, well-paying jobs with benefits. The other counties with gaming centers face the same thing.

I hope it works out for everyone; but I have to wonder. Was it really fair for only four counties to decide a statewide referendum? If everyone in the state gets to benefit, shouldn’t the entire state have had the chance to participate in deciding? When, not necessarily if, other states allow table gaming won’t we once again be facing the same thing? Pennsylvania allowed slot machines and threatened WIRGC and it’s revenue. That is why table gaming became such an important issue (not just here in Ohio County; all four of the counties that have a gaming center.) The thought is "get table games to keep people coming here!"

So, it’s not inconceivable that Pennsylvania and other states will soon allow table games. Again there will be the threat of loss of business and revenue. Competition in business is a good thing, but are we depending too much on ONE? Even the West Virginia Lottery Commission, which oversees these gaming centers, also funds the Gamblers Help Network of West Virginia. So, it does everything it can to bring in revenue from gambling while helping people stop gambling?

Hello, Sybil. Which is the Commission doing, promoting gambling or helping those who have a problem with gambling? Then of course this is the same State, which didn’t allow all citizens to participate in a statewide referendum. Apparently the State decided how much revenue it would receive then decided that only those who live in the counties where gaming centers are would be allowed to decide the matter; thereby stacking the deck as much as the gaming centers did.

I don’t have so much a problem with table gaming or Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center or any other gaming center. I do, however, question HOW it was done and what the effects will be; not just what affects us now but later.

TESTICLES

6/29/07

We’re guys. We’re MEN! We are tough; we are strong; we are virile; we aren’t "wimpy", after all we slide into home base ON our penises and get up and brush ourselves off without a care. When we have a cold we buck up, take a cold medicine and get on with our lives. When something hurts or aches, we ice it and "walk it off." We don’t "run to the doctor" with every runny nose, ache or pain" … we’re MEN.

Why is it we men ignore our own health? I suppose it’s because as MEN we are uncomfortable with health concerns and prefer to deny any problems that may exist; that way, we won’t appear "weak" and our strong, virile, masculinity remains intact.

Okay, guys, when was your last physical exam? Was it the last time your mother took you to the doctor for a physical because she was in charge? Was it as a teenager to enter school or join the school sports team? When was the last time you when to the doctor for a check-up?

Did you know that statistically men die sooner than women? Did you know that taking an active part in your own health could prevent serious health problems BEFORE they become serious? How much do you know about your own body?

We all know how delightful our testicles are. They are quite the source for both pleasure and pain. However, our balls are much more than that. Not only do they produce sperm, part of the reproductive system; they are an integral part of the endocrine system responsible for the production of testosterone, the primary male hormone. Testosterone is a major part of puberty in guys, and as a guy makes his way through puberty, his testicles produce more and more of it. Testosterone is the hormone that causes guys to develop deeper voices, bigger muscles, and body and facial hair, and it also stimulates the production of sperm. "The boys" are housed in a pouch outside the pelvis beneath the penis. The scrotum helps to regulate the temperature of testicles, which need to be kept cooler than body temperature to produce sperm. The scrotum changes size to maintain the right temperature. When the body is cold, the scrotum shrinks and becomes tighter to hold in body heat. When it's warm, the scrotum becomes larger and more floppy to get rid of extra heat. This happens without a guy ever having to think about it. The brain and the nervous system give the scrotum the cue to change size.

We often view our penis as the definition of our maleness. Our testicles do their job hidden behind the penis, overshadowed by the phallic. The fact is we are male because of these two walnut-sized, egg-shaped things that hang in our scrotum between our legs. Our dick is there only because of them; we are men only because of them; our masculinity is only because of them; we are MEN only because of them. As funny as it may sound, we are men because of our nuts.

Why then do we not pay more attention to them? Did you know that testicular cancer is the most common cancer in males between the ages of 15 and 35? If detected early and treated, testicular cancer is almost 100% curable.

As men, we all too often wait for symptoms to become unbearable before we seek medical attention. In the case of testicular cancer, symptoms aren’t always apparent until too late.

Listen to the American Cancer Society: "In about 90% of cases of testicle cancer, men have a painless or an uncomfortable lump on a testicle, or they may notice testicular enlargement or swelling. Men with testicular cancer often report a sensation of heaviness or aching in the lower abdomen or scrotum." "Testicle (or testicular) cancer is cancer that develops in one or both testicles in men or young boys (also called the testes; a single testicle is also called a testis). Testicular cancer is a highly treatable and usually curable form of cancer. In rare cases, men with one type of testicular cancer called germ cell cancer notice breast tenderness or breast growth. This symptom results from the fact that certain types of germ cell tumors secrete high levels of a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which affects breast development. Blood tests can measure HCG levels; these tests are important in diagnosis, staging, and in follow-up of some testicular cancers. Two other types of testicular cancer, testicular Leydig cell tumors and Sertoli cell tumors, often result in a mass that can be distinguished from a germ cell tumor only by examination of the tumor under a microscope. However, some Sertoli cell or Leydig cell tumors produce androgens (male sex hormones) or estrogens (female sex hormones). These hormones may cause symptoms that provide clues to the correct diagnosis. Estrogen-producing tumors of men may cause breast growth and/or loss of sexual desire. Androgen-producing tumors may not cause any specific symptoms in men, but in boys they can cause growth of facial and body hair at an abnormally early age."

More frightening: "Even when testicular cancer has spread to other organs, only about 1 man in 4 may experience symptoms related to the metastases prior to diagnosis. Lower back pain is a frequent symptom of later-stage testicle cancer. If the cancer has spread to the lungs and is well advanced, shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, or bloody sputum may develop. Some men with testicular cancer have no symptoms at all, and their cancer is found during medical testing for other conditions."

Think about that. NO symptoms. Without taking one’s health into seriously, one may never know until it’s too late; after the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

What can you do? Monthly testicular self-exams are recommended, just as women are encouraged to perform self breast-exams. However, there is some controversy about male testicular self-exams between the ACS and the medical community. "The American Cancer Society believes it is important to make men aware of testicular cancer and remind them that any testicular mass should be evaluated by a doctor without delay. Some doctors feel that delay in seeking medical attention after discovering a mass is the most common reason for a delay in treatment. Other doctors feel that not noticing masses promptly is also an important factor in delaying treatment, and they recommend monthly testicular self-examination by all men after puberty. The ACS does not feel that there is any medical evidence to suggest that, for men with average testicular cancer risk, monthly examination is any more effective than simple awareness and prompt medical evaluation. However, the choice of whether or not to perform this examination should be made by each man, so instructions for testicular examination are included in this section. Because men with certain risk factors (cryptorchidism, previous germ cell tumor on one side) have an increased risk of developing testicular cancer, monthly examinations should be seriously considered for these men and the ACS suggests they discuss this issue with their doctor."

"If you plan to perform the self-exam the best time to do so is during or after a bath or shower, when the skin of the scrotum is relaxed. Stand in front of a mirror and hold the penis out of the way. Examine each testicle separately. Hold the testicle between the thumbs and fingers with both hands and roll it gently between the fingers. Look and feel for any hard lumps or nodules (smooth rounded masses) or any change in the size, shape, or consistency of the testes. Contact your doctor if you detect any troublesome signs. Be aware that the testicles contain blood vessels, supporting tissues, and tubes that conduct sperm and that some men may confuse these with a cancer. If you have any doubts, ask your doctor."

Let’s be honest here. I, for one, don’t know that I’d notice a difference in my balls without any pain or discomfort. Would you?

So, we’re back to where we started. GET TO YOUR DOCTOR. If you don’t have one, find a GP and have a yearly physical. There is nothing unmanly or less than masculine about attending to your own health.

You young guys may think that seeing a physician is something "older men" do because of age and growing older; that because of you being "young and healthy" you don’t need to have physicals or check-ups. What you aren’t considering is your own human, physical vulnerability.

It’s time men took as much interest in their own health and well being as they do in their own sexuality. After all, without health there won’t be much else. Don’t allow "youthful arrogance" to fool you into believing you are really invincible. Take care of yourselves; take the initiative to see to your own health.

Don’t become sick or die from ignorance.
